JASON NEWSTED: 'I Don't Think It's Proper For SEPULTURA To Go On Without The CAVALERAS'
July 2, 2009Former METALLICA bassist Jason Newsted, who made a guest appearance on SEPULTURA's 1998 album "Against", believes that it's not "proper" for the Brazilian metal band to carry on without either of the founding Cavalera brothers (Max and Igor; on guitar/vocals and drums, respectively).
During a guest appearance this past Friday night (June 26) on the "Bone Metal Zone" show on the San Francisco radio station 107.7 FM, Newsted was asked by host Nikki Blakk about his involvement with SEPULTURA. "Yeah, I did one song on the 'Against' album with them," he replied. "I played six-string bass on it. We recorded it at The Chophouse [Newsted's home studio]. They came and stayed for a few days, and we rocked out, and that came of it."
He continued, "I've played a lot of music with Andreas [Kisser, SEPULTURA guitarist] over time — I've done real projects with him that we released to people and all that kind of stuff.
"Andreas is one of my very, very favorite people."
When asked for his opinion on Andreas' decision to continue SEPULTURA without Max and Igor, Newsted said, "No matter how much I love Andreas, I don't think it's proper for SEPULTURA to go on without the Cavaleras — one or the other; I would rather have it with both, but if we can't have that, I really don't think we should have anything."
He added, "I'm interested to hear Andreas' solo album, however, because he's very talented. He has a new record out — it's a double album. I haven't anything from it yet, but I know from recording him a lot of times that he has a lot... a very deep well. He's very talented."
Newsted performed with SEPULTURA at the Barulho Contra Fome (Noise Against Hunger) concert in August 1998, which was also the first gig of the "Against" tour. This performance included additional guest appearances by the Xavantes tribe (who'd featured on "Roots"),Mike Patton (FAITH NO MORE),Carlinhos Brown, original SEPULTURA guitarist Jairo Guedz and Coffin Joe.
